MEMORABLE TRACK WORLD CUP MOMENTS

After winning keirin gold at the 2010 world championships in Copenhagen, Sir Chris Hoy took to the boards at the 2011 Manchester Track World Cup sporting the rainbow jersey and would win a thrilling and destructive final to bring the velodrome to its feet.

Five riders - Jason Niblett, Azizulhasni Awang, Kamil Kuczynski, Edward Dawkins and Juan Peralta Gascon – lined-up with the Scotsman with the Beijing triple gold medallist opting to go from the back and round the outside in the dying stages of the contest to lead the race.

Unbeknown to Hoy however, a tremendous crash behind him on the final turn took out the rest of the field, leaving them scrambling over the line with the remains of their bikes as a rapturous crowd saluted Hoy’s triumph.

More remarkable was Azizulhasni Awang, the Malaysian suffering a splinter from the track which had pierced through his leg. Despite this, he completed the race before the full realisation of the injury became apparent to him. He would later undergo surgery at the Royal Infirmary Hospital in Manchester, the below video shows the injury – note it is not for the squeamish.

It was an injury that ruled him out of the 2011 world championships, but the popular rider was present for the London 2012 Olympic Games, making the keirin final and he could well feature in Glasgow this winter.
